Pilates
Pilates offers many benefits due to the focus on postural correction and the combination of strength and mobility exercises performed in each session.
Many of us will have some imbalances in our bodies that make us prone to pain or injuries, for example due to unhelpful work postures or hobbies. Pilates is an excellent way of identifying these problems while working through specific exercises to help correct them.
Pilates consists of around 35 different exercises that can be made more or less challenging through the use of body weight, levers and small equipment. Classes are taught in small groups (a maximum of 6) to ensure that everyone achieves an excellent quality of movement and that we can easily make adjustments to your exercises if required.
One-to-one or two-to-one sessions
These are perfect if you feel you have specific requirements, and can be a good way to start Pilates even if you plan to go into a group at a later stage. You may prefer to work on your own, or with a partner or friend, and each session will be planned specifically to meet your goals and needs. We will also consider your preferences, which may include sessions taking place in either one of our studios or your own home.
Beginners Classes
Our six-week Beginner course is designed for people who have either never done Pilates before, or would like to go back to basics again before progressing to the next level. The classes are kept to a maximum of six participants so that quality movement can be maintained and monitored throughout. It is a mat-work class that uses some small equipment to vary and advance exercises as required.
Intermediate Classes
These classes are appropriate for anyone who has completed the six-week Beginner course without a gap in practicing Pilates. The exercises are developed and varied as we go through the course and many people choose to continuing participating on a rolling basis. If you have done Pilates elsewhere or feel you may be appropriate for this class, then please do get in touch to discuss this further.
Pilates following a cancer diagnosis
Pilates can have many benefits for people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Beyond the typical health benefits you would experience from following the recommended guidelines for exercise. For example, people who have had breast cancer can achieve significantly improved range of shoulder movement and an increase in abdominal muscle strength from participating in Pilates, both of which might be impacted upon by their targeted cancer treatment.
Men and women with pelvic cancers are also likely to suffer a significant decrease in their core muscle strength due to the important role of the pelvic floor in core stability. Everyone can benefit from postural improvements with compliant Pilates practice, but we can help those who have had specific surgeries or radiotherapy/chemotherapy to enhance their practice and support them in achieving their goals in a safe and professional manner.
